LONDON-BASED indie production company , Wilson Worldwide, whose Managing Director Josh Wilson is championing the Anti-Racism movement, has announced a deal to produce four novels written by the best-selling author MP Wright, negotiated through Marjacq Scripts.
It’s important these stories are told to educate and inform all in our national society and to help bring us all closer together
The series of four novels, all published by Black & White Publishing are Heartman (2014) – which was nominated for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger (2015); All Through the Night (2016); Restless Coffins (2018) and A Sinner’s Prayer (2019).
Wright’s debut, Heartman, set in Bristol in 1965, sees the protagonist, Bajan former police officer and immigrant from Barbados, Joseph Tremaine Ellington, reluctantly turning to private detective work after arriving in the UK alongside others from the Windrush generation – Caribbean immigrants who were invited to the UK to boost the economy after World War II.
The four books, each set in and around the St Pauls district of Bristol in the 1960s and 70s, explore attitudes towards race, racism and the experiences of those men and women coming to the UK from the West Indies at the time as well as being noir crime stories.
The books have been optioned by WWP with the promise of featuring a predominantly black cast.
Josh Wilson said: “We are tremendously excited about optioning this series, especially given the timing of both the Windrush and the Black Lives Matter movements, which are both close to my heart, as my parents are both from Jamaica.
“It’s important these stories are told to educate and inform all in our national society and to help bring us all closer together through transparency and understanding.
“For years, I have also been on record as championing for diversity in UK television and this series will enable my production company to seek out the best Black talent here in the UK, both behind and in front of the camera.”
Author, MP Wright added: “I am delighted that the award-winning film and tv company, Wilson Worldwide Productions will be working towards bringing my ‘Windrush Noir’ quartet featuring Bajan detective, Joseph Tremaine Ellington to the screen.
“I know Ellington’s 60’s, Bristol-set world could not be in better hands than with Josh Wilson and his wonderful team.”
Wilson Worldwide was launched in 2013 by former journalist and Forbes 30 under 30 alumnus Josh Wilson.
WWP has produced TV and branded entertainment content with a portfolio including Sky Sports documentary series Mission Mudder and Chasing the Dream as well as BBC documentary Saving Our Beautiful Bali.
