JENNIFER HUDSON doesn’t give us a choice when she asks for our respect in the first trailer of the Aretha Franklin biopic in which she plays the superstar.
Hudson’s powerhouse vocals open the teaser trailer for Respect and viewers get to see just how well she’s embodying the Queen of Soul.
While Hudson is centre stage on screen in Respect, the biopic is full of star power.
Mary J Blige plays singer Dinah Washington in the film and viewers get a glimpse of her in the trailer, too, as well as Marlon Wayans, who plays Ted White, Franklin’s first husband.
Forest Whitaker also features as C.L Franklin, the Queen of Soul’s Baptist minister father.
At the helm behind the camera are Tracey Scott Wilson, who wrote the screenplay, and Liesl Tommy, the film’s director.
Respect follows the rise of Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church choir to her international superstardom.
Hudson, who has described playing Franklin as her “dream” role, received the megastar’s approval before filming began.
Franklin had told Hudson directly that she wanted her to play her in a film about her life.
This won’t be the first time the singer and actress, who won an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls, channels Franklin.
Hudson paid tribute to the late singer. Last year she sang a rendition of Franklin’s 1968 hit Ain’t No Way on stage at the tribute concert, Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul.
While audiences will have to wait until January 2021 to see the full film, the trailer can be watched now.
