A marine technology firm which is aiming to help clean up the seas by cutting out the use of toxic chemicals has been crowned Company of the Year at the 2021 CoventryLive Business Awards.
NRG Marine (Sonihull), which is based on Westwood Business Park in Coventry, has developed an ultrasonic antifouling system which reduces marine growth to improve the performance of sea vessels and structures such as oil rigs.
Sonihull is a range of antifouling products which are attached to any solid surface that is exposed to raw seawater such as hulls, shafts, propellers and water jets and uses ultrasound technology to keep them clean and working as efficiently as possible.
This replaces the traditional practice of using toxic chemicals to clean these areas which reduces the impact on marine ecosystems and boosts the fuel consumption of vessels, saving CO2 and cost to operators and preventing invasive species from spreading.
The company was named Green Business of the Year at tonight’s awards run by our sister website CoventryLive before being picked from the category winners to take home the overall Company of the Year prize (scroll down for full list of winners).
CoventryLive editor Adam Moss said: “I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to all of our finalists, winners and especially our company of the year NRG Marine (Sonihull).
“Climate change and green technology is now front and centre of the global news and political agenda so it’s great to know that one of our own from right here in Coventry is setting the pace in marine tech and helping conservation.
“With the COP26 conference coming very soon in Glasgow as well, it seems appropriate that our Green Business of the Year should take home the overall award alongside Purple Planet Packaging in the Small Business category.
“They are both definitely ones to watch and I look forward to hearing more about their respective growth patterns over the coming months and years.”
Other category winners at the ceremony included law firm Lodders in the Professional Services category while Staeger Clear Packaging took home our Covid Defiance Award, a special one-off category to recognise a company which has shown great fortitude in the face of the pandemic.
The CoventryLive Business Awards made a welcome return after the 2020 ceremony had to be cancelled because of the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.
The ceremony was held at the Coventry Building Society Arena and hosted by TV broadcaster and weather presenter Emma Jesson.
The 2021 judging panel was chaired by Marc Reeves, Midlands marketplace publisher for CoventryLive’s and BusinessLive’s owner Reach plc, who was joined by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce’s trade director Ajay Desai, CityFibre’s regional partnership director Leigh Hunt and Barclays’ business banking regional manager Kurt Pollard.
