NOMINATIONS FOR the Black British Theatre Awards opened this week.
The BBTAs span 28 categories including four new ones that have been introduced to ensure that the awards are as inclusive as possible and reflect how theatre has had to adapt as conditions change.
The new awards include:-
- Best use of Innovation and Technology – in recognition of the use and adaptation of technology for the public access to theatrical and theatrical associated events
- Casting Director Recognition Award – to recognise impact on casting to progress inclusivity and representation and to provoke as well as enable theatre makers to effect change.
- LGBTQ+ Champion Award – This award is for the person/persons or organisation, that have contributed awareness in theatre, through creativity and advancement of the LGBTQ+ community
- Disability Champion Award – to recognise a venue, company or individual who has shown consideration and commitment to taking steps toward inclusion.
This year the Black British Theatre Awards ceremony will go ahead virtually and will be live-streamed so that it can be enjoyed by audiences throughout the UK and beyond.
It will be hosted by Ore Oduba, and promises to be a joyous celebration.
Oduba enthused: ‘“I’m really excited to be back hosting the Black British Theatre Awards this year, albeit virtually! 2019 was a monumental year for the BBTAs but as the theatre industry – like everyone – is suffering at the hands of the crisis, 2020 feels just as important a time to shine a light on the amazing talent within the community.“’
Nominations can be made at www.blackbritishtheatreawards.com from June 1 to August 3.
