ANTICIPATED: Serena Williams
AS THE countdown to the US open begins, Nike and designer Virgil Abloh have released their collaborative new line that pays homage to sports icon, Serena Williams.
The news of its drop sent social media into overdrive where the full collection was revealed. On the court, Williams will wear a one-shoulder asymmetric performance dress as well as a bomber jacket, a bag and limited editions of The 10: Nike Air Max 97 and The 10: Nike Blazer Mid SW.
With the aim to redefine both the style and performance of William’s in mind, designer Abloh said in a statement: “With Serena, we have one of our generation’s most powerful, inspiring athletes as the muse. I was trying to embody her spirit and bring something compelling and fresh to tennis.”
Her sportswear dress is available in colours black and lilac that embodies a ballet-like tulle skirt. While the eye-catching look has received thumbs up for its style, ultimately its purpose is to enhance her athletic ability through its lightweight texture and supportive mesh that will keep her cool throughout the tournament.
Abloh continued: “What I love about tennis is the gracefulness. It’s an aggressive and powerful game, but it takes touch and finesse. So the dress is feminine but combines her aggression.
“It’s partially revealing. It’s asymmetrical. It has a sort of ballerina-esque silhouette to symbolise her grace. It’s not about bells and whistles and tricks. It’s just about it living on the body, and expressing Serena’s spirit with each swing of the racket.”
