Mayor of Wolverhampton Elias Mattu dies aged just 59

The Mayor of Wolverhampton has died aged just 59.

Dad-of-three Elias Mattu had been ill for some time.

The sad news was announced by Wolverhampton Council.

It said on Twitter: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of serving @wolvesmayor Cllr Elias Mattu at the age of 59 after a lengthy illness.

“He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his wife Asha and children Anthony, Ishmael and Jessica.”

Flags were flying at half-mast at the council’s Civic Centre on Friday.

Coun Mattu was installed as the 159th mayor of Wolverhampton last May.

He represented Graiseley ward for 18 years and said he wanted to make volunteers his theme for his time in office.

Coun Mattu was was previously deputy mayor and a senior cabinet member, as well as serving on numerous other committees and external bodies.

He was a power lifter before becoming a regional coach in the sport and running his own club where he trained five British and one European champions.

Coun Mattu said at the time: “I am delighted to be nominated to become Mayor of the City of Wolverhampton for the coming year.

“It will be a great honour and a privilege to serve this great city.

“Wolverhampton has a history going back more than 1,000 years and has never stood still.

“I moved to Wolverhampton as a child and was brought up here and have lived here ever since.

“My theme for the year is recognising the value of volunteering.

“Charities and volunteers are doing tremendous work in our city helping the most needy and vulnerable people.

“This is a good time to represent the City of Wolverhampton.

“There is so much regeneration going on. I will try to promote Wolverhampton over the next 12 months to the best of my ability.”

His chosen charities for his year in office were Interfaith Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton Sickle Cell Care Centre, Street Pastors, Wolverhampton Central Youth Theatre and Acorns Children’s Hospice.
