Sports car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled the next stage of its new green technology which will be added to two of its flagship models.
The company said the new three-cylinder, plug-in hybrid system would have a range of up to 201.8mpg and would debut on its two best-selling vehicles, the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport.
JLR said this was the next step in delivering its ‘Destination Zero’ mission to shape future mobility.
The 1.5-litre engine combines a conventional petrol engine with an electric motor and has been designed and engineered in house.
JLR has filed more than 40 patent applications for this latest technology.
The introduction of this latest technology to the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport marks the second phase in the electrification of the company’s Halewood plant in Merseyside.

More than 1,500 employees have been retrained to build the latest electrified variants of the compact SUVs.
Last year, the company announced it would build electric drive units at its Wolverhampton-based Engine Manufacturing Centre, offering full flexibility between new petrol and diesel engines and electric units as drivers transition from conventional to electrified vehicles.
This is in addition to investment in the battery assembly centre in Hams Hall near Birmingham.
Executive director of product engineering Nick Rogers said: “Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our Jaguar Land Rover family, our latest plug-in hybrid offers the same awesome capability and composure with all-electric driving and stunning efficiency, both on- and off-road.”
