More than 500 new apartments will be built in Birmingham after city planners gave the project the green light.
Developer and building manager Watkin Jones has won consent for its ‘Maker’s Yard’ scheme on land between Sherlock Street, Hurst Street and Bishop Street in the city’s Southside district.
The application site currently houses a series of industrial buildings which will be demolished to make way for 551 apartments to rent across six buildings, the tallest of which will be 30 storeys.
The units will range from one to three bedrooms with 47 to designated as affordable housing.

There will also be 16,145 sq ft of commercial space, 36 parking spaces, a cycling hub, a wellbeing centre and communal space including lounges, workspaces, a roof garden and a landscaped courtyard.
The development is expected to create around 305 jobs during each year of construction and up to 120 further jobs when fully operational.
The plans were approved at today’s meeting of Birmingham City Council’s planning committee, with all ten members voting in favour of the scheme.

Birmingham-based Glenn Howells Architects has designed the scheme which is expected to be completed by 2025.
