One of the UK’s largest business awards ceremonies will be held online this year.

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce normally welcomes around 1,400 guests to the ICC in the city every March for its annual ceremony but this year was forced to postpone it because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Chamber chiefs have now decided to hold the event virtually on July 23 rather than gamble on getting government clearance to hold a physical ceremony later in the year as was originally planned.

Eighty-two companies will be competing to win one of 12 categories, including the overall business of the year title, while president Steve Allen will announce the recipient of his President’s Award (read the full shortlist here).

The ceremony, which will be free to watch on the chamber’s website from 7pm, will be hosted by Heart FM DJ Ed James and chamber chief executive Paul Faulkner while Aston Performing Arts Academy and local poet Casey Bailey will provide the entertainment.

Mr Faulkner said: “After careful consideration, we have now decided to bring the awards ceremony online this year and proceed with recognising those businesses which put themselves forward for an award earlier in the year and embody the spirit of enterprise and ambition that is a hallmark of our regional economy.

“While the ceremony will be different from usual, we are embracing the spirit of change and relishing the opportunity to shine a positive spotlight on our regional business community at this difficult time.

“I very much hope people will enjoy tuning into the programme we have planned on the night.

“The judges had the unenviable task of whittling down the entries to 82 companies which all deserve recognition because we know entering awards like this is no small task and we greatly appreciate those who made the considerable effort to take part.

“On the evening, we will also recognise the challenges the world and indeed the local business community face right now.

“These can only be overcome if we all work together, shoulder to shoulder.”

The 2021 chamber awards are due to return to the ICC and will be held on April 1.
