Insurance expert Tom Baker has seen his dream come true after launching his own business.
The 27-year-old, who lives in Stone, Staffordshire, says he has always wanted to start his own company after taking part in a ‘career academy’ programme at school.
Now – after clocking up almost 10 years in the insurance industry – he has launched Instinct Insurance and Risk Management Services.
Tom said: “I’ve always wanted to own my own business. At school I did a career academy course where local businesses offer children opportunities to learn about business, about how they operate and about working life.
“One of the benefits of the scheme was that during the summer holidays, you could spend seven weeks working in a paid internship.
“I did seven weeks at a local accountancy firm and I was eventually offered an apprenticeship once I finished school – and later, I was contacted about a trainee job at Aynsley Insurance Brokers.
“To be honest I’d never even heard of an insurance brokerage. I’d never come across one, but I went down and had a look at it and ended up doing three years there.
“I started as a trainee doing personal insurance, but wanted to move into the commercial insurance side and unfortunately there were no opportunities, so that’s when I looked elsewhere.”
Tom eventually landed a job at a TEn Insurance Services Ltd, based in Manchester, where he progressed to a team leader responsible for six staff.
But after being forced to work from home during the Covid-19 pandemic, he decided it was the right time to go it alone.

Tom said: “I’d always been thinking about starting my own business but one of my worries was if I would actually be able to operate from home, so when lockdown came I realised I could, and this gave me the motivation to do it.”
Instinct Insurance is an independent insurance brokerage whose services include business insurance, high net worth insurance, personal insurance and risk management to clients across the UK.
It is part of The Enterprise Network – otherwise known as TEn Insurance – the largest appointed representative network in the UK.
Tom said: “I think the pandemic has shown people that there is value in having an insurance broker, so there’s certainly still a market out there.
“But I’m not here to try and win every piece of business, for me it’s about offering a personal service. My clients are guaranteed to get someone who is fighting their corner, someone that’s really passionate about the industry and someone who will look after them.”
He added: “I work from home at the moment, but in the future I would love to have a high street branch and employ some local people.
“The big dream is to build Instinct into a brand, perhaps expand my services with an accountancy arm, HR and law, but in the short term I just want to grow my business locally.”
