Adapting to the new normal and changing direction to keep everyone safe, our local businesses have put in an astonishing amount of effort to keep Birmingham’s economy not only surviving, but thriving.
The resilience throughout our city this past year has been inspiring and definitely deserves recognition. The Birmingham Post Business Awards 2021 is a night dedicated to doing just that.

The New Business of the Year category, sponsored by Millennium Point, celebrates the achievements of businesses up to three years old. It is a massive feat to take an idea and grow it into a viable business so this award commends those that have demonstrated impressive success in the short time from establishment, with the ambition to do even better.
Here are the finalists in the New Business of the Year category:
In 2018, from the question ‘how do you…’, HDY Agency was established to deliver a collaborative approach that combines data-driven, channel-first content marketing with a curiosity lead philosophy. It has built up an impressive roster of national and global clients which span beauty, finance, technology, education, travel and tourism and retail.
With one out of every three clients based outside of the Midlands, HDY has so far drawn in excess of £500,000 back into the region. It aims to shine the spotlight on the breadth of emerging talent within the West Midlands. Not only does the company raise money for local charities, it has also embarked on the journey to becoming carbon neutral and will also be rolling out work experience, personal development and diversity and inclusion programmes in the coming months.
HDY has a strong client portfolio with no single client representing more than 20 per cent of the business, mitigating risk and stabilising the agency’s future. Having secured contracts with global coffee machine supplier Evoca and global catering and facilities management company Sodexo, HDY has plans to expand its international client base further.
The company has many accolades from its short time since establishment, including awards from PRCA and FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards while co-founder Angel Gaskell was shortlisted for Digital Entrepreneur of the Year at Digital Women Awards.
The business prioritises a happy, healthy team and so introduced wellbeing courses and programmes during lockdown. Regular surveys show high levels of staff engagement and satisfaction compared with the industry norm, hitting an Employer Net Promoter Score of 45 compared to the 28 average industry benchmark.
Meta Eagle is a managed IT service provider established in February 2020, just before the pandemic. Despite being a new business, the company has managed to quickly adapt and has focused on helping various clients across multiple industries to make sure they have the technology in place to allow them to continue to operate during these testing times.
Meta Eagle specialises in delivering innovative technology across public and private sectors that allows customers to ‘work hard from anywhere’, offering services that range from traditional on-site infrastructure support to hosted platforms.
Through research and development in different technologies, the company has been able to not only automate elements of the business but find a more proactive way of working. This ranges from active monitoring of server and network infrastructure to using virtual reality and mapping software to plan large scale network deployments.
Meta Eagle has continued to grow, meaning it is able to focus on expanding its team and give young people an in into the IT industry. Its current focus is helping those in hospitality industry reopen smoothly and effortlessly.
Towers Virtual Tours
Towers Virtual Tours is a virtual tour, videography and photography service for all types of property. Its extensive custom-built infrastructure is designed to provide a cost-effective and high-end virtual tour solution.
During lockdown in October 2020, Daniel Hall noticed a gap in the property market. His vision was to enable estate agencies to keep the market moving even throughout restrictions by allowing prospective buyers to view properties from the comfort of their own home.
He established Towers Virtual Tours so that buyers could view as many properties as they liked without committing to a face-to-face viewings and keeping everyone safer.
Since its establishment, Towers Virtual Tours has recruited many local people and has grown to a team of 45, with two offices and plans to open internationally. Towers Virtual Tours has been approved for the government Kickstart scheme to recruit and train five 18 to 24 year olds and give them a great start to their career, as well as an insight into the fast-growing proptech industry.
Believing in the importance of corporate responsibility, the company regularly works with local charities. Its vision is to continually adapt and improve the services offered to reflect current digital trends, ensuring clients receive a tailored approach so they can tell their story.
